Skincare products for sun-damaged skin on a countertop.

No-nonsense tips and care for sun-damaged skin

Some of us, of a certain age, grew up basking in the sun without a care in the world—long before daily sunscreen became non-negotiable for healthy skin. I wouldn’t trade those years, or those long days in the California sea, sun, and sand, for anything. But these days, I practice a bit more restraint—and rely on a few subtle strategies for the sun spots that have decided to stay.

A simple, no-nonsense routine for managing sun-damaged skin, using a few products that actually help over time.

Below are a few pieces I use personally. It’s a minimal one, by design. I prefer to keep things simple and as natural as possible.

Happy exploring,

Jo

  • A Realistic Approach to Skin Repair: The goal of the routine isn’t total transformation or undoing the past, but rather using a minimal, no-nonsense approach to manage hyperpigmentation and improve skin hydration over time.
  • Targeted Treatment Categories: The routine is broken down into three functional phases: Skin Repair (using serums like Osmosis Renew MD and natural pomegranate oils), Skin Concealers (lightweight coverage like Makeup Forever to even out tone), and Overnight Hydration (using masks and gel creams to reset the skin).
  • Balancing High-End and Budget Finds: The tips mix specialized esthetician-recommended products with accessible, budget-friendly options found at drugstores, such as The INKEY List Retinol, CeraVe Vitamin C, and Neutrogena Hydro Boost.

The Ranch-Tested Routine

Skin Repair (Serums & Oils)

This is where you can try to undo a bit of the damage. Over time it helps even things out, like hyperpigmentation, and keeps skin looking a little more settled.

  • I use a lot of Osmosis serums for skin rejuvenation. They come recommended by many estheticians, and a little in the morning—and again before bedtime—can really go a long way. My favorite is Renew MD for overall anti-aging, but Rescue, Correct, and Stemfactor are all good products I would recommend for skin health. (As a bargain find, I also recommend The INKEY List’s Retinol Serum for general wrinkle repair!)
  • I was pleased to discover recently that Pomegranate Oil is a wonderfully natural, and more budget-friendly, solution for lingering sunspots. Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve has a facial oil you can buy directly online, and it really does the trick. I like to put a dab or two on my forearms as well, and you absolutely can’t beat its intoxicating scent, thanks to the Argan “liquid gold” properties mixed in.
  • Sometimes it feels the most satisfying to walk into your local drugstore and pick up a worthy over-the-counter solution. You really can’t beat tried and true Vitamin E for any skin scarring or moisturizing replenishment. I like the pure liquid form (as opposed to breaking open capsules) and just 2.5 ounces will last you a very long time. Vitamin C serum, such as CeraVe, is another powerful antioxidant and an easy-to-find option.

(Makeshift) Skin Concealers

Not everyone needs to go this extra mile, but I like that some light coverage can smooth things out without masking everything. The goal isn’t perfection—just a more even version of what’s already there.

  • HD Makeup is a hearty solution for concealing skin imperfections, even if you don’t plan to be on-camera anywhere. I have been a fan of Makeup Forever for many years, as a lightweight and effective foundation that can roll with the punches, both indoors and out. If I’m baring my forearms or upper chest in a summer outfit, I like to blend in a small amount from one of their many shades to match my skin tone.
  • Self-tanners have come a long way since their inception. These days, harsh orange streaks, stained hands, and the tell-tale chemical smell are a thing of the past. Used sparingly, a tanner can even things out and take the edge off uneven tone. The key is subtlety, and I love the innovative, no-muss aspect of L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze self-tanning towelettes. My current favorite? Luna Bronze Glow Tanning Moisturizer. It’s as seamless to apply as everyday body lotion and the smell is divine.

Overnight Treatments (Hydration & Repair)

As a practicality, I don’t go overboard with night moisturizers. Simply put, if you’re outdoorsy and live somewhere with 300 days of sun a year, you’re bound to cancel out some of those defensive benefits. It still feels nice to find a mid-range option that is affordable and effective. They do most of the work while you’re asleep, and a good one leaves your skin feeling reset by morning, especially after long days outside.

  • A brand I consistently trust for sunscreens and face cleansers, Neutrogena is usually going to give you good bang for your buck. I like their Hydro Boost Gel Cream for superb overnight hydration.
  • I try to work in a weekly nighttime mask, such as the NIOD Voicemail Masque. It goes on light and mostly translucent, with an organically earthy smell. I can feel the exfoliation working as soon as I put it on and it leaves my skin feeling silky soft the next day. You can apply it after any other serums in your nightly routine. Another option I like is Sephora’s Overnight Hydrating Mask. It combines hyaluronic and polyglutamic acids for maximum plumping and moisture retention.

Some Final Touches

  • Liquid blush can add back a bit of life when the sun has taken more than it’s given. Some brands can be overpowering, but I absolutely adore NYX’s Born to Glow! Liquid Illuminator for that sunkissed look, even if a heavy SPF is behind the scenes.
  • Between washdays, a Dry Shampoo keeps things presentable without starting from scratch. It’s especially useful when the day gets ahead of you. As far as brands go, there are a lot of strong contenders that can really clean up your scalp, but not surprisingly I like Not Your Mother’s Texturizing Beach Babe Dry Shampoo in a toasted coconut scent. I spray this on, brush, and I’m instantly transported back to bodysurfing waves and walking onto a windy beach, hair drying into something close to naturally textured perfection. What a fitting way to end.

A Note on Expectations

There’s only so much you can achieve, and that’s fine. It’s not about undoing anything. Just making things a little more manageable.

Most of this is about hydration, balance, and small improvements over time—not transformation. A little consistency goes further than a shelf full of products.
