What Are Camouflage Photography Tents?
At Rancho Los Venados, we adore our deer, so any chance to view them up close without startling them is a pleasure. While a camouflage tower like the one above might typically be used for hunting game, it’s not something Moe or I require, so we have repurposed one into our photography tent! As an avid astrophotographer, Moe has invested in some fine zoom lens camera equipment — a great tool for candidly capturing animals in their element.

In fact, there are plenty of uses for a camoflauged tent that don’t require any expensive gear. Grab a pair of binoculars and enjoy some birdwatching or wildlife observation. Pull your phone out of your pocket and snag some video of the locals in their habitat, like we had a chance to (see below). It can even be used for straightforward observations on the property or for educational opportunities, such as teaching young ones the appreciation of nature, and the art of patience, two great life skills.
Key Features to Look For
When choosing a photography tent, there are a couple things to consider. I recently saw a wonderful episode of Nature where a photographer spent six months isolated in the wild to try to capture images of white tigers in Siberia. He also used a camouflage tent, but it was tucked into a cavern on the ground to completely blend in with surroundings and not scare off the notoriously elusive creatures. For us on the ranch, we thought it a nicer approach to blend in with the oak trees at an elevated level and keep unwanted critters like beetles, snakes and tarantulas farther down. The overall room inside, total viewing ports, weight, weather resistance and set up time all came into the decision equation. The base is extremely solid and we have seen it stand up to exceptionally strong winds on a slight incline. It is spacious enough for someone over 2 meters and has 360 degrees of windows for ultimate camera coverage. Moe was able to assemble it in one morning. The most difficult part was aligning the tent canvas to the base in the breeze. If you’ve ever put up a tent on a camping trip you already know the pain 😉
The fun for him after that was choosing some accessories. It might be a little over-the-top for some, but if you are aiming for serious enthusiast, we can definitely vouch for the added level of convenience and comfort.
